Key Differences - Classic vs Modern Razors

# Cartridge Razor - use a detachable plastic head containing multiple blades (usually 3 to 5 razor blades).

These razors are designed for convenience – just click in a new cartridge when the old one gets dull. They're widely available in stores and often marketed as “modern” or “advanced.”

While the idea is that more blades equal a better shave, the reality is that multiple blades drag across your skin multiple times with each stroke. This repeated contact can lead to increased irritation, razor burn, redness, and even ingrown hairs – especially for men with sensitive skin.

# Safety Razor - a more traditional tool and use a single, replaceable metal blade – either a single edge (SE) or double edge (DE).

The blade is secured between two metal plates and exposes only a small cutting edge, giving you more control and precision during your shave.

Though they might require a small learning curve at first, safety razors are gentler on the skin, especially when used with proper shaving technique and good lather. Because there's only one blade gliding across your skin, there’s less friction, less irritation, and fewer chances of razor burn or ingrown hairs.

# The Bottom Line

If you have sensitive or easily irritated skin, a safety razor is often the better choice.

Cartridge razors may seem convenient, but their aggressive multi-blade design can do more harm than good over time.

With a safety razor, you get a closer, cleaner shave – and once you get the hang of it, it’s just as fast and far more satisfying.

Making the switch to a safety razor isn’t just about tradition – it’s about shaving smarter.
